Turmeric Shown to Improve Insulin Resistance in Animals

Curry is one of several Asian dishes containing an exotic spice called turmeric. This particular seasoning provides the popular dish with its yellow color and distinctive spicy flavor. Although turmeric is commonly used in Asian cuisine, it may also be beneficial for people with diabetes. Turmeric contains a powerful ingredient known as curcumin. Studies on animals have shown that curcumin may reduce blood sugar levels, improve nerve damage, and fight against other diseases and conditions associated with diabetes.

Tests performed on animals have shown that turmeric may affect blood glucose levels. These results provide evidence that curcumin may be able to improve insulin resistance, making it easier to control your blood sugar levels. Although these results are promising, scientists have yet to test turmeric on people with diabetes.

Between 60 to 70 percent of people with diabetes suffer from nerve damage. Diabetic neuropathy occurs when abnormally high blood glucose levels harm your blood vessels. Damage to your nerves can result in pain, tingling, or numbness in your hands, arms, feet, and legs. Turmeric's anti-inflammatory properties can lessen these sensations, providing relief for people with this condition.

Not only does Turmeric alleviate symptoms caused by diabetic neuropathy, but it can reduce your risk for certain cardiovascular conditions. Whenever you suffer an injury, inflammation occurs. Its job is to prevent infection and heal wounds. In people with diabetes, inflammation can occur for no reason. Having chronic inflammation can harden your arteries, increasing your risk for a stroke, heart attack, and heart disease. Reducing or preventing inflammation can eliminate artery build up, allowing blood to travel to vital organs.

In addition to fighting against cardiovascular diseases, curcumin is a powerful antioxidant that protects your body from free radicals. These toxins are caused by factors including, pollution, stress, and poor diet. Free radicals work by attacking the cells in your body, making you more susceptible to cancer. The curcumin in turmeric tracks down free radicals and prevents your cells from being damaged. Turmeric is especially helpful in preventing breast and prostate cancer.

Turmeric is most commonly found in Indian food stores; however, you can also find the ingredient in your local grocery or health food store. In addition to purchasing it in powder form, capsules are also available. Although turmeric is most commonly found in Asian meals, it's easy to add the ingredient to your favorite pizza, meat or soup. Although it can be used in many dishes, limit your intake until you've become adjusted to the effects caused by turmeric and diabetes.

For the most part, turmeric is safe. However, large doses of turmeric can cause constipation, diarrhea, and other stomach related problems. Taking turmeric with food may alleviate these issues. Before taking turmeric, it is important consult your doctor or nutritionist. They will be able to provide you with more information regarding turmeric and diabetes.
