The Best & Most Effective Blood Glucose Monitors

As a diabetic, you know that monitoring your glucose level regularly is extremely important for controlling your blood sugar. Using a reliable blood glucose monitor is also important. But there are a lot of blood glucose monitors on the market, and some are better, more effective, and easier to use than others. So how can you decide which one to buy? You can ask members of your diabetic support group for suggestions. You also can read blood glucose monitor reviews to compare features.

Here are four, high-quality blood glucose monitors from two companies you might want to look at:

Liberty Medical Monitors

Liberty Medical has two blood glucose monitors you should consider. If you qualify, you might be able to get either one of these blood glucose monitors free from Liberty Medical through Medicare.

Liberty Glucose Meter

The first of the blood glucose monitors, called Liberty Glucose Meter, is a compact model with a large backlit display that makes it easy for you to read the results of your blood sample. A multi-site monitor, the Liberty Glucose Meter lets you take samples from either your finger, forearm or palm. The Liberty meter turns itself on and off when you insert and remove the test strip, is self-calibrating to ensure accurate results, requires just a tiny blood sample (0.05 microliters), and displays the results in no less than four seconds. Additionally, it can store 300 results.

The monitor’s built-in charting feature can display graphs of your results from the previous 14, 30 or 90 days on the screen. The Liberty meter can give you automatic mealtime averages and six daily reminders to monitor your glucose. The rubber grips make the monitor easy to handle and its rubber feet make it stable on a tabletop. You can download your blood glucose results to a computer, notebook or PDA.

Liberty True Result Glucose Meter

The second of the Liberty monitors, called the Liberty True Result Meter, is a compact model with a large backlit display that makes it easy for you to read the results of your blood sample. A multi-site monitor, it lets you take samples from either your finger or forearm. The Liberty meter turns itself on and off when you insert and remove a Liberty GoldSensor Laser Technology test strip. The monitor is self-calibrating to ensure accurate results, requires just a tiny blood sample (0.05 microliters), and displays the results in no less than 4 seconds. It can store 500 results. The monitor’s built-in charting feature can display graphs of your results from the previous 7, 14 or 60 days on the screen. The Liberty meter can give you four daily reminders to monitor your glucose and comes with a two-tone testing alarm. The monitor’s shape makes it easy to hold and its rubber feet make it stable on a tabletop. You can download your blood glucose results to a computer, notebook or PDA.

Lifescan One Touch® Ultra2®

You can always rely on the quality of LifeScan’s blood glucose monitors. An excellent model is the new One Touch Ultra 2. Some blood glucose monitor reviews consider the Ultra 2 better and more accurate than the One Touch Ultra® that it replaced. They also found that its small size makes it easier to handle and take with them than the earlier model. The Ultra 2 has large buttons that let you operate it quite easily; requires a larger blood sample than the two Liberty monitors (1.0 microliters); displays the results in five seconds; and can store 500 results.

A separate battery powers the back-lit display—a feature that provides you with a backup battery. A writer of one of the blood glucose monitor reviews found the extra battery helpful. When the battery for his monitor died, he simply replaced it with the one that lit the display. The OneTouch® Diabetes Management Software that comes with the monitor provides many pre-made reports, charts and graphs. You can use them to identify trends in your blood glucose level and patterns in your eating. You also can print, email or fax the reports—an easy way to provide updates to your physician or dietitian.
