Bayer manufactures several products for people with diabetes, including lancets, blood glucose test strips, and blood glucose meters. As of 2011, Bayer produces three different meters: Bayer Contour, Bayer Contour USB, and Bayer Breeze 2.
People with diabetes can purchase a Bayer blood glucose meter at stores across the country or from a reputable online dealer. Medicare users may also be able to obtain a Bayer blood glucose meter with the help of an established diabetic medical supplier.
Bayer Glucose Meter: The Contour
The Contour is the least specialized Bayer blood glucose meter, and operates like a standard blood monitor. Test strips are inserted into the base of the machine, and require approximately a 0.6 μL blood sample to produce a reading. The Contour tests samples after 5 seconds and displays the results on a large screen. Results can be tracked to produce 7, 14, and 30 day averages for review.
Additional features of the Contour include pre-meal and post-meal markers, a personalized HI/LO target range, and pre-coded strips.
Bayer Glucose Meter: The Contour USB
The Contour USB performs all of the same functions as the standard Contour, but also operates as a USB. According to Bayer, it is: "The first blood glucose meter with plug-in technology that connects directly to your computer." In other words, it's the first blood glucose monitor that can plug directly into your computer without additional tools or cables.
The fact the Contour USB can connect to a computer so easily is significant because it allows users to easily digitize data. By using Bayer's diabetes management software, Glucofacts Deluxe, people with diabetes can view and organize blood sugar data. This can allow them to track their progress, spot trouble areas, and keep their doctors informed with ease.
The Contour USB is slimmer than the Contour, which makes it easier to store and carry. However, its screen is also smaller, which may make it more difficult for some people with diabetes to read.
Bayer Glucose Meter: Breeze 2
The Breeze 2 has a wider, more ergonomic design than any other Bayer glucose meter. A primary reason why the Breed 2 is a larger Bayer glucose meter is because of the way it loads strips. Instead of each strip being inserted manually at the time of testing, the Breeze 2 operates with discs of strips that can be used 10 times. This means less time handling strips, which can be a relief to people with diabetes that have difficulty with their hands or eyesight. For these reasons, the Breeze 2 has received an Ease-Of-Use Commendation from the Arthritis Foundation.
Choosing a Bayer Blood Glucose Meter
Choosing a meter is a very personal decision. The blood glucose meter you decide on should be a good fit for your lifestyle, budget, and primary medical concerns. If you think a Bayer blood glucose meter could be a good match for you, consult with your physician or a reputable diabetes medical supplier for more information.
