Traveling with Diabetes Testing Supplies

Learn how to safely travel with Diabetes.

Traveling with diabetes testing supplies
Having diabetes doesn’t mean you can’t travel and enjoy life to the fullest. It just means that you’ll have to plan ahead.

Pack smart
You’ll need to pack more than your toothbrush and pajamas when traveling with diabetes. Taking your diabetes testing supplies is very important. For instance:

  • Pack more than you’ll need. Bring more test strips and lancets than you will need.
  • Pack the little things, too. When packing your diabetes testing supplies, don’t forget little things like alcohol wipes and batteries for your meter.
  • Pack snacks. In addition to your meter and diabetes testing supplies, bring some non-perishable snacks if you’re unsure when food will be served (a fast-acting carbohydrate source is especially smart).

Travel smart
The American Diabetes Association has worked in conjunction with the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) to ensure the safety and convenience of travelers with diabetes. But you also have to do your part, including:

Know what you can carry.
Be sure to notify the security screener that you have diabetes and are carrying your supplies with you. The following diabetes-related supplies and equipment are allowed through the checkpoint once they have been screened:

  • Insulin and insulin loaded dispensing products (including jet injectors and preloaded syringes) that are clearly identified and labeled.
  • Unlimited number of unused syringes when accompanied by insulin or other injectable medication.
  • Lancets.
  • Unlimited number of used syringes when transported in Sharps disposal container or other similar hard-surface container.

Carry meds separately.
You should separate your medication and associated supplies
from your other property in a pouch or bag. Medications should be labeled so they are
identifiable.

Notify security.
Immediately inform screeners if you are experiencing low blood sugar and are in need of medical assistance.

A second ingredient in Diabetes prevention is frequent physical activity--whether it is a standard 30 minute exercise routine each day or 3 segments of 10 minutes of physical activity. "What kinds of physical activity?" you ask-from cleaning house to cutting grass with a push mower, weeding the garden or walking to the store around the corner. It doesn't really matter what you do, just do something. As the old song says, "Let's get physical!"
