The Right Diabetes Glucometer

Learn the 4 S's for finding the right Diabetes Glucometer

Follow the 4 “S's” for finding the right diabetes glucometer
A diabetes glucometer is a small, portable, battery-powered device for home blood glucose monitoring. By using a diabetes glucometer to test your blood throughout the day, you can make smart decisions about managing your diabetes — for example, when and how much medicine to take, when to exercise and when to eat meals or snacks.

The 4 S's
For the most part, all diabetes glucometers function using the same technology. Choosing one really boils down to a matter of your personal preferences. Things to consider include:

Simplicity. Newer diabetes glucometers feature one-step sampling and readout. The chemically-treated strip is placed in the meter, which is placed against the skin to draw blood and provide a readout in one easy step.

Sample size. You may want to look for a diabetes glucometer that requires only a small blood sample. Meters using older technology require more then 5 micro liters of blood for each test, while newer meters can provide a reliable reading using under 3 micro liters of blood.

Shape. Look for a diabetes glucometer with a compact, easy-to-use shape and size that’s right for you. You may want to look for adiabetes glucometer that requires only a small blood sample. Special features. Some diabetes glucometers incorporate a voice activator, permitting testing without being able to see the meter — great if you have vision problems. Newer diabetes glucometers allow you to hook the meter to a computer so that stored readings can be graphed and analyzed at home or your doctor's office.

And used insulin syringes and other "sharps" can accidentally hurt other people - everyone from you and your family to the person who collects your garbage. So, as you take care of your diabetes, make sure you take care of the safety of everyone around you by safely handling and disposing of used diabetes insulin syringes and lancets.

Stat Medical Devices - The first step in getting an accurate glucose test is getting a good sample to test ("finger sticks," as they are called). It all starts with proper lancing, or puncturing, of the test site to draw out a small sample of blood.

Bayer Diabetes Management - Bayer actively promotes take-charge diabetes management as a great way to get your blood sugar as close to normal as possible - and to keep it there. Of course, the folks at Bayer realize that it won't be easy at first. But Bayer researchers know you can live a healthy life with fewer complications by keeping tight control of your blood sugar and making some smart lifestyle choices.

Duracell Meter Batteries - Unlike old-fashioned glucose meters, today's lightweight, portable meters run on batteries. But, did you know that a diabetes meter operating without sufficient power could deliver inaccurate readings?
