Glucose Test Meter

It's all in the Details: Your Glucose Test Meter

As a diabetic, keeping up with your blood glucose levels is vital to your routine, and to do that, you need a reliable glucose testing meter. As the blood glucose test meter is an integral part of managing your diabetes, you want one that is easy to use and accurate, but what other features should you look for in selecting your glucose testing meter?

Choosing a Blood Glucose Test Meter:

With so many companies producing glucose test meters, finding one that meets all your needs can be confusing. However, before beginning your quest it is helpful to know the difference between the types of glucose test meters available. The first type of blood glucose test meter uses chemicals that change color when a drop of blood is put on a plastic strip and then inserted in the meter. The glucose testing meter uses chemicals then gives an electronic reading of your blood glucose level. The second style of glucose test meter measures the blood glucose by reading the amount of electrons in the blood on the test strip. In recent years, companies like Cygnus have released the GlucoWatch which is worn like a watch and measures samples of your perspiration and can give up to the minute reading with just the touch of a button.

Making Your Blood Glucose Test Meter Selection

  1. Insurance Coverage- Be sure  you know what your insurance company will cover before investing in a specific blood glucose test meter; also be sure you know how many test strips as well.
  2. Your budget- Since it is the test strips and not the blood glucose meters that are the greatest expense, be sure you know all you can about the strips used. Many companies make strips that are cheaper, but equally accurate as the name brands.
  3. Your Dexterity- While some glucose test meters require minimal movement and easily opened test strips, this is not always the case. Be sure you can manipulate your hands so that you can have correct readings.
  4. Your time- Some meters takes more time. If you are always in a hurry, choose a glucose test meter that works quickly.
  5. Your Eyesight- If vision is a problem, select a meter that has an easily read display
  6. Support System- Does the blood glucose test meter provider have a 24 hour help line? Are the test strips available at your pharmacy or supply company?
  7. Correctness- Accurate readings are critical—make sure you know how and when to calibrate your glucose test meter.
  8. Size-If you are frequently on the go, you may want to consider a pen or card sized blood glucose test meter that fits easily into your pocket.
  9. Memory-If possible, consider a glucose testing meter that stores your readings; some recall as many as 300, so look for the best deal for your needs.
  10. Maintenance- Know what type and where you can get replacement batteries for your meter.
  11. Convenience- Consider getting 2 meters so you don’t have to carry your supplies to and from work.

When it come to purchasing your blood glucose testing meter, it pays to shop around and get the meter that is perfect for you—it’s all in the details.
