70 30 Insulin

Coverage at Mealtime and In-between

70 30 insulin (also called a 70/30 mix) is a special type of insulin that provides both a steady supply of insulin throughout the day as well as a "burst" of insulin after you eat a meal or snack. The advantage of  70 30 insulin is that it works quickly at mealtimes and also helps keep your insulin levels consistent throughout the rest of the day and night.

Your insulin needs change
Your insulin levels go up and down throughout the day depending on your body’s need for glucose, its primary energy source. For example, you usually need more insulin right after meals when your body is busy processing the glucose from the food you’ve just eaten. Your body then needs plenty of insulin to help your cells absorb the glucose. At other times—when you are sleeping, for example—your body needs much less insulin.

How 70 30 insulin works
A  70 30 insulin mix is different from other insulin mixtures because it works so fast. A 70 30 insulin mix contains a rapid-acting component that is absorbed quickly and starts working to cover the rise in blood glucose after eating. At the same time, 70 30 insulin has a gradually released component that works between meals, lasting up to 24 hours in some people. A 70 30 insulin mix is composed of 70 percent of an intermediate-acting insulin and 30 percent "regular" insulin, which goes to work more rapidly.

Note that any change in insulin should be made cautiously and only under medical supervision.
